Helvellyn, Nethermost Cove

A man who survived an avalanche on Helvellyn in January 1984 as a 17-year-old scout was reunited with members of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team 40 years later. Three of the six scouts in his group died when they were swept 700 feet down the mountain near Nethermost Cove. Mr Ellis was rescued and spent six weeks in a coma before recovering.

Outcome: casualty evacuated and hospitalised; three fatalities

Low Crag, Buttermere

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team held a remembrance service at Low Crag, Buttermere on 15 June 2019 to honour two team members killed in a rock fall during a training exercise 50 years earlier. John Thompson died at the scene and Michael Stephenson died from his injuries the following day.

Outcome: two fatalities

A male casualty with a broken leg was rescued from How Stean Gorge after North Yorkshire Police called out the team. The casualty was assessed, loaded onto a rescue sled, and successfully extracted from the gorge before being handed over to an awaiting ambulance.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by stretcher
