animal rescue Southern Uplands

farm near Kelso, Borders

A 500kg heifer fell into a hidden Victorian icehouse on a farm near Kelso in May and was trapped underground. An 11-hour multi-agency rescue involving Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and farm contractors successfully freed the animal using a drone to locate a bricked-up door and a digger to create a safe exit route. The heifer was returned to the farm in good health.

Outcome: animal successfully rescued and returned to farm in good health
