mountain biker cliff fall Pennines Serious incident

A mountain biker fell approximately 80 feet down a cliff face above Butterley Reservoir in Wessenden Valley. Multiple emergency services coordinated a complex rescue operation, ultimately evacuating the casualty by raft across the water to a waiting air ambulance. The rider was transported to a major trauma centre with serious injuries including a punctured lung and broken ribs, but is recovering well.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by raft and air ambulance to major trauma centre; recovering in hospital

Slaithwaite / Dovestones

Injury/Medical Emergency Pennines

The team responded to multiple callouts over Christmas and Boxing Day. On Boxing Day, they assisted an ambulance crew with a casualty in the Slaithwaite area of Huddersfield. Earlier that day, they were involved in evacuating a walker with a broken ankle from high ground in the Dovestones area.

Outcome: Casualty evacuated

Between May and August 2024, the team responded to 23 incidents across various locations. These callouts included searches for missing persons, assistance with injured walkers and cyclists, and water rescues.
