Easby Abbey

casualty recovery Yorkshire Dales

A 15-year-old female required recovery from a footpath near the river by Easby Abbey. The ambulance service had already recovered the casualty by the time mountain rescue team members arrived on scene, and the team were stood down.

Outcome: casualty already recovered by ambulance paramedics before mountain rescue arrival

Keld

fallen walker with lower leg injury Yorkshire Dales

A male casualty with a lower leg injury was located near Keld and required specialist technical rescue to be extracted up steep ground. The casualty was recovered to the path and transferred by stretcher to Keld for handover to an ambulance.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by stretcher to waiting ambulance

A female spectator fell down a steep bank at a local event and required technical rescue assistance. Fifteen team members worked with the Air Ambulance and Yorkshire Ambulance Service to recover the casualty up the steep ground to the waiting ambulance.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by technical rescue to ambulance

Ilton

A female mountain biker was rescued after sustaining injuries from a fall on a remote track above Ilton. Team members provided medical treatment for cuts and suspected elbow and pelvic injuries before the casualty was transported by road ambulance.

Outcome: casualty treated and transported by road ambulance

Hipswell, Catterick Garrison

The team was requested to assist North Yorkshire Police in searching for a missing female from the Hipswell area of Catterick Garrison. Before the search commenced, police located the woman safe and well outside the search area.

Outcome: located safe and well by police

Middleham

A nine-year-old child went missing near the river in Middleham. The child was quickly located safe and well by police with assistance from the local mountain rescue team, fire service, and police helicopter.

West Burton

A female walker suffered a medical episode on a remote fell path above West Burton. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended and airlifted the casualty to James Cook Hospital while the team deployed to assist.

A competitor in the Dales D30 race suffered a medical episode while the team was providing safety cover. Four team members responded and treated the casualty.

Aysgarth Falls

Two women became trapped on rocks at the lower falls of Aysgarth. The team worked with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to locate them and guide them safely along a lower ledge to secure ground.

Outcome: both escorted out safely

Coast to Coast route

A walker separated from her group on the Coast to Coast route became lost in hot conditions. The team located her, provided medical assessment, and transported her to her accommodation in Reeth.

Keld

Animal Rescue/Water Rescue Yorkshire Dales

The rescue was requested by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue for a dog trapped on an island near Keld. Team members arrived to support the efforts, ultimately establishing a handline that allowed for the safe extraction of all parties involved.

Outcome: Successful rescue

Whitaside / Wensleydale

Vehicle entrapment/Rescue Yorkshire Dales

Mountain Rescue was called out to assist a party stranded in their vehicle due to ice above Whitaside. After assessing the conditions, the team advised the group that it was safe for them to retrace their steps down into Wensleydale under supervision.

Outcome: Safe exit from the area

River Burn south of Masham

Injury/Rescue Yorkshire Dales

The rescue was requested after an individual sustained a lower leg injury from a fall while walking their dog. The casualty was located on a footpath by the River Burn south of Masham, making access difficult for initial emergency services.

Outcome: Casualty was packaged and transferred to an ambulance.

Preston Under Scar

Entrapment/Rescue Yorkshire Dales

The rescue team was called out by North Yorkshire Police regarding a walking group trapped in a shooting hut north of Preston Under Scar. A local team member attended the scene and found the door bolted from the outside, allowing the group to be released.

Outcome: Safe release of walking party

Whitaside

Missing Person Search/Rescue Yorkshire Dales

The team were called out by North Yorkshire Police to assist with a search for a high-risk missing person in the Whitaside area. Following the search, assistance was required near the river for casualty assessment and extraction before the individual was evacuated.

Outcome: Casualty safely extracted and evacuated to an ambulance.

Spine Race (above Hawes)

Hypothermia/Rescue Yorkshire Dales

The rescue was requested for a runner who was found to be hypothermic while undertaking the Spine Race on the Spine Race route. Although the safety team managed to access the casualty with a vehicle, the mountain rescue team responded to support the effort near Hawes.

Outcome: Casualty safely managed by other services

Whitaside

Vehicle recovery/assistance Yorkshire Dales

A rescue callout was made to a stranded vehicle in the Whitaside area on 7 January 2026. The team responding from a previous job were able to attend and safely escort the occupants of this second vehicle to a team transport vehicle heading to Reeth.

Outcome: All occupants safely transported

Middleham Bridge

Water Rescue/Search Yorkshire Dales

The team was called out to Middleham Bridge following concerns that an individual may have entered the water. After deploying resources for a bankside search, it was later confirmed by a member of the public that the person had returned home safely.

Outcome: Person found safe and well

Between Swaledale and Wensleydale

Rescue from ice/exposure Yorkshire Dales

A rescue was required for a family that had become trapped on sheet ice on a steep bank in a remote area between Swaledale and Wensleydale. Fifteen team members were deployed to the scene, where the vehicle was located and the family was safely escorted down for recovery.

Outcome: Safe recovery
