Between May and August 2024, the team responded to 23 incidents across various locations. These callouts included searches for missing persons, assistance with injured walkers and cyclists, and water rescues.

Mountain biking accident/Injury Southern Uplands

The local mountain rescue team has noted a significant increase in callouts, with approximately half involving injured mountain bikers at Glentress. The team advises riders to assess trails carefully, read all signage, and use trail grading systems appropriate for their abilities.

Beinn Alligin, Torridon

missing person Highlands

A 65-year-old hill-walker from Dingwall has been missing since 8 September 2024. His car was found at a car park near Beinn Alligin on 18 September, prompting a search by mountain rescue teams, RAF, police, and search dogs in the Torridon hills and nearby areas.

Farndale

Lost Person Rescue Yorkshire Dales

A member of the public was reported as lost on moorland above Farndale. Following location confirmation despite limited mobile coverage, team members were dispatched to escort her off the moor and return her safely to her vehicle.

Ben A’an

Injury/Medical Emergency Highlands

The team responded to an injured walker on Ben A'an following previous callouts. The casualty was successfully evacuated with assistance from the Scottish Ambulance Air Ambulance.

Callander, Ben A’nn, Ben Lui

Multiple rescues (Evacuation, Injury, Lost Persons) Highlands

Volunteers responded to three challenging calls over a 12-hour period. Incidents included the evacuation of an injured person near Callander, a rescue on Ben A’nn for a minor with an injury, and guiding a lost group back to safety on Ben Lui.

Outcome: All individuals were safely evacuated or located.

The Schil, Cheviots

heat exhaustion Southern Uplands Serious incident

A father and son were rescued from The Schil in the Cheviots on Sunday afternoon after both suffered heat exhaustion during a two-day walking trip. The father became unwell at the summit, vomiting and losing consciousness, prompting his son to call 999. Both were treated for dehydration and heat-related illness by Border Search and Rescue Unit and evacuated by vehicle.

Outcome: both casualties treated and evacuated by vehicle

Ben Lui

Lost/Injury Highlands

A team was called out by Police Scotland Forth Valley on Ben Lui to locate a party of five, one member of whom had sustained a muscle problem and was unable to move. Following an assessment, the casualty was airlifted to an RV point for recovery at home.

Outcome: Evacuated by air; casualty recovered at home

Applecross, Wester Ross

caver stuck in cave Highlands

A caver became stuck in a tight crack in a cave near Applecross in Wester Ross and was unable to move. Members of the Scottish Cave Rescue Organisation and local cavers worked together for five hours to carefully manipulate him out of the squeeze, with Torridon Mountain Rescue Team providing surface support. He was brought to the surface unharmed but cold and tired.

Outcome: casualty rescued unharmed

Disorientation/Getting Lost Highlands

Two walkers became disoriented in hazardous terrain on Slioch near Kinlochewe after triggering an alert. Following a search involving 17 team members and two dogs, contact was made later that evening, allowing the walkers to safely descend with guidance.

Outcome: Walkers were uninjured and able to walk out safely.

Ochil Hills

Injury/Rescue Highlands

Ochils Mountain Rescue Team responded to a call in the Tillicoultry area of Ochil Hills on Sunday afternoon. Volunteers attended to a hiker who had sustained a serious leg injury before safely carrying them off the hill for ambulance transfer.

Outcome: Transported to hospital

Missing Person Search Dartmoor

The team attended an incident in the Yelverton area on December 15th to assist with a search for a high-risk missing person. After four hours of searching across Clearbrook and Meavy up to Burrator Dam, the individual was not found during the initial search. The police continued their efforts overnight and located the person safely the following morning.

Outcome: Person located safe and well the following day.

Fall/Injury Highlands

A walker sustained a serious head injury after falling down a mountain in the Northwest Highlands. Rescue teams were able to reach the casualty despite low cloud cover and successfully prepared them for airlift.

Outcome: Transported to hospital after rescue efforts

Five Sisters of Kintail

Fall/Injury Highlands

Mountain rescue teams were called out on Saturday afternoon following an incident near the summit of the Five Sisters of Kintail. A hillwalker sustained a serious head injury after falling down a steep section of rock. Following initial efforts hampered by low cloud cover, rescuers successfully stabilized and airlifted the injured person to hospital.

Outcome: Hospitalised

Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team responded to two separate incidents within six hours on 3 July 2024. The first involved an injured hillwalker above Ettrick Kirk who was evacuated by stretcher, whilst the second concerned a lost cyclist between Eddleston and Romanno Bridge who was located sheltering in a hut and assisted to safety by police and a local farmer.

Fall/Trauma Highlands

A professor sustained serious injuries after falling approximately 100 feet down a scree gully while hiking in the Scottish Highlands. He was located and subsequently airlifted to safety by the Torridon Mountain Rescue team.

Mourne Mountains

Mourne Mountain Rescue Team responded to two separate incidents on the Mourne Mountains on Saturday. One casualty sustained a leg injury following a fall, while another person fell ill. Both were rescued during helicopter operations.

Outcome: both rescued by helicopter

Stuc a’chroin

Cragfall/Assistance Highlands

A team was called out to assist a walker who had become cragfast on the steep slopes of Stuc a’chroin. With assistance from other teams and walkers, the casualty was guided down safely without injury.

Rogie Falls

A walker slipped and sustained a lower leg injury at Rogie Falls on 13 May 2024. Fourteen members of Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team assisted the SAS in carrying the casualty by stretcher to a waiting ambulance.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by stretcher to ambulance

Glengyle, Loch Katrine

Injury (Cycling) Highlands

The team responded to an injured cyclist in the Glengyle area of Loch Katrine on Saturday. They worked with several other agencies to safely extract the casualty from a difficult location.

Tinto Hill, Southern Uplands

An injured walker fell near the summit of Tinto Hill in the Southern Uplands on Saturday morning. Due to strong winds, a helicopter could not winch her directly, so she was carried to a suitable landing site and airlifted to a nearby car park. She was then transferred by ambulance to hospital for treatment.

Outcome: casualty airlifted by helicopter and taken by ambulance to hospital

Beinn Ime

stranded walkers in snow Scotland

Two walkers became stranded on Beinn Ime in the southern Highlands after sliding in snow on the afternoon of Saturday, 2 March 2024. One walker became crag-fast and a second got into difficulty, prompting a helicopter evacuation. Both were safely uplifted and returned to the foot of the mountain.

Beinn Eighe, Black Carls

climbers fell on descent Highlands

Two climbers fell during the descent of the Black Carls on Beinn Eighe on Saturday, 2 March. Torridon Mountain Rescue Team responded and evacuated the casualty by helicopter winch from the ridge as darkness approached, avoiding a lengthy stretcher carry.
