Afan Forest

Traumatic injury (Mountain Biking) Brecon Beacons

Volunteers were called to an injured mountain biker who had crashed while downhill biking in the Afan Forest area. The individual sustained head and abdominal injuries but was wearing a helmet, which prevented more severe harm.

Outcome: Transported to hospital for further medical attention

Exhaustion and dehydration Highlands

A woman in her 70s was rescued by Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team after becoming exhausted and dehydrated whilst walking between Tollaidh and Slattadale in Wester Ross during exceptionally hot weather. Rescuers and local police officers walked her to the roadside where she received first aid treatment.

Outcome: Walked to roadside and received first aid treatment

Dinas Rock / Pen Y Fan

Injury/Medical Emergency Brecon Beacons

Mountain Rescue teams were called out on a busy day to assist with two separate incidents. The first involved an individual who collapsed in the Dinas Rock area and was treated for a possible broken ankle before being transferred to an ambulance. Later, another male required assistance after injuring his knee on the summit of Pen Y Fan.

Outcome: Treated and transferred to ambulance; second casualty received assistance.

Arran Hills

Lost/Injured Person Scotland

A walker was found alive after spending approximately 48 hours on a mountainside in the Arran Hills. Search efforts involved multiple teams and a Coastguard helicopter until the individual was located near A’ Chir ridge. The casualty received immediate treatment at the scene before being airlifted to hospital.

Outcome: Rescued and hospitalized

Dinas Rock

Injury/Rescue Brecon Beacons

The team responded to two separate calls on Dinas Rock. One call involved assisting with the extraction of a female who had sustained injuries while horse riding. The second incident required support in rescuing an injured teenager at the rock, who was subsequently transported by stretcher.

Outcome: Injured individuals were safely extracted and received hospital care.

Severn Estuary

Emergency services were called to reports of a man entering the Severn Estuary on 23 July. Despite search efforts involving police, HM Coastguard, a helicopter and lifeboats, the man was not located and has been declared a missing person.

Outcome: search called off, man declared missing

Pen y Fan (Bwlch Duwynt)

Rescue Brecon Beacons

A multi-team rescue operation was launched to assist a female located in Bwlch Duwynt on Pen y Fan. The lady was successfully stretchered off the location by dedicated volunteers from three different mountain rescue units.

Outcome: Safe extraction

Upper Brynamman

Injury/Extraction Brecon Beacons

Western Beacons Mountain Rescue was called out early on July 21st to assist with a man suffering from a lower leg injury near Upper Brynamman. A joint effort involving mountain rescue and the Mid and West Wales Fire Service constructed a technical rope system to safely raise and extract the casualty.

Outcome: Transported to hospital for further medical attention

Snowdon

Two women were rescued from Snowdon during the 2019 Snowdon International Race. One runner suffered a knee injury on the Llanberis Path, and a second woman in the area injured her ankle. Both were airlifted to hospital by Coastguard helicopter with assistance from Llanberis Mountain Rescue team.

Outcome: both casualties airlifted to hospital by Coastguard helicopter

Central Beacons / Brecon

Stretcher carry/Extraction Brecon Beacons

The team was called out on 17 July to assist other mountain rescue teams with what initially appeared to be a straightforward stretcher carry. Upon arrival, it became apparent that rope work was necessary for the extraction, requiring full integration of medical, ropes, and stretcher disciplines from all involved parties.

Outcome: Casualty safely moved to allow others to return to work

A man who wandered away from a party at Dulyn Bothy in Snowdonia was found asleep under a rock by Ogwen mountain rescue team. He was located unharmed at 05:00 BST and was able to walk down unassisted, unaware that a search had been organised for him.

Outcome: found unharmed, walked off under own power

A walker fell 20ft from a waterfall near Sgwd Gwladus in the Brecon Beacons, sustaining a serious leg injury. Members of the public used mobile phone camera flashes to guide a Coastguard helicopter to the scene in the heavily wooded ravine. The casualty was winched to safety and airlifted to Swansea Hospital.

Outcome: casualty winched to safety and flown to Swansea Hospital

A man suffered a cardiac incident on Snowdon in the Bwlch Glas area of the Llanberis Pass late on Friday night. He was attended to by mountain rescue team members and an off-duty nurse, then airlifted by coastguard helicopter to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor for treatment.

Outcome: airlifted by helicopter to hospital for treatment

River Plym

Missing Person Search Dartmoor

Police requested assistance in searching for a lost 16-year-old who was camping overnight. The team focused their search east of the River Plym and successfully located the young person relatively quickly. He was found safe and in good health.

Outcome: Found Safe

Derriford

Missing Person Search Dartmoor Serious incident

The team responded to assist Devon and Cornwall Police with a search for a high-risk missing person near Derriford. After assembling at B&Q on Tavistock Road, the police reported that the individual had been found safe and well.

Outcome: Person found safe and well

Notter Bridge (River Lynher)

Flood response/Rescue Dartmoor Serious incident

The team responded to an incident involving heavy rainfall and potential flooding across the peninsula. They were deployed to various locations, including a caravan park at Notter Bridge, where the River Lynher had flooded homes and required evacuation. Working with multiple agencies, they successfully rescued eight individuals and two dogs.

Outcome: Eight people and two dogs rescued.

A 56-year-old walker died following a fall on Tryfan mountain in Snowdonia on 27 May 2019. He was discovered by a fell runner the following morning and recovered by Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team with RAF Mountain Rescue Service assistance. The coroner recorded provisional cause of death as chest and head trauma from the fall.

Outcome: casualty deceased, recovered from mountain

A woman slipped and fell a significant distance on Snowdon between the Pyg and Miners' Tracks while descending, sustaining a head injury. She was attended to by Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and the coastguard helicopter, then airlifted to hospital by the Wales Air Ambulance.

Glyder Fawr, Snowdonia

A climber fell 20ft while descending Glyder Fawr in Snowdonia on Sunday afternoon, sustaining serious head injuries and losing consciousness. He was airlifted by coastguard helicopter to Royal Stoke University Hospital, a major trauma centre.

Outcome: airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital trauma centre

water rescue - person in distress South West

A woman who had been threatening self-harm entered the River Severn near Over in Gloucestershire. A major multi-agency rescue operation involving police, fire, ambulance, the SARA lifeboat, and a helicopter successfully rescued her from the water.

Outcome: casualty rescued and transferred to specialist ambulance for medical assistance
