collapsed runner Southern Uplands

A competitor in the Montane Spine Race collapsed and injured himself on Border Ridge at Score Head during the endurance event along the Pennine Way. He was treated by medical personnel and stretchered from the remote location by Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team and North of Tyne team, then transported to hospital by ambulance.

Outcome: casualty stretchered off hill and transported to hospital by ambulance

A woman suffered a suspected broken ankle while walking near Sgwd yr Eira waterfall in the Brecon Beacons. Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team attended and carried her on a stretcher to a Coastguard helicopter, which airlifted her to hospital with support from Welsh Ambulance Service paramedics.

Outcome: airlifted to hospital by Coastguard helicopter

A man's body was found in the River Severn near the Second Severn Crossing on Monday morning following an extensive search by Severn Area Rescue Association lifeboat crews and a coastguard helicopter. The search began at 1am and resumed later that morning, with the body discovered on the riverbank near Black Rock picnic area shortly after 9am. The death was not being treated as suspicious.

Outcome: man's body found and recovered

Tryfan, North Ridge, Snowdonia

Two walkers strayed into a gully while climbing the North Ridge of Tryfan in Snowdonia after losing their way despite receiving directions from another group. They were winched to safety by a coastguard helicopter and taken to a place of safety.

Outcome: both rescued by helicopter, taken to safety

ankle injuries from slips Brecon Beacons

Longtown Mountain Rescue Team responded to two simultaneous ankle injury call-outs on 2 January 2020. A man slipped on Sugar Loaf above Abergavenny and a woman slipped on Offa's Dyke Path; both were evacuated to hospital with assistance from Air Ambulance and local support.

Outcome: both casualties evacuated to hospital

Kylesku, Sutherland

Assynt Mountain Rescue Team assisted an injured woman walker on a Sutherland hill near Kylesku. The casualty sustained a lower leg injury and was stretchered to a waiting ambulance by eight team members in a three-and-a-half hour operation.

Snowdon, PYG Track

drunk walkers requiring assistance Snowdonia

Two men were found heavily intoxicated on the PYG Track on Snowdon and were led to safety by Llanberis Mountain Rescue after being reported by other walkers to police. The men were unable to move unaided and were brought down to Pen Y Pass by a hill party before the team was stood down.

Outcome: both men led to safety to Pen Y Pass

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team responded to four incidents over the Christmas period in the Lake District. These included two walkers benighted below Great Gable, a couple cragfast after high winds damaged their tent above Buttermere, a man who fell and broke his arm in Wind Gap and required helicopter evacuation, and a couple disoriented on Red Pike in failing light.

Outcome: all casualties safely evacuated; man with broken arm airlifted to hospital by Coastguard helicopter

Bridge of Orchy, Argyll

Two hillwalkers sustained minor injuries after being caught in an avalanche in the mountains above Bridge of Orchy in Argyll. Members of Arrochar, Oban, Glencoe, Search and Rescue Dog Association Scotland and police attended to provide assistance.

missing person South West

A woman went missing following a collision on the A48 near Newnham. Specialist rescue teams including Severn Area Rescue Association, Coastguard, firefighters and police search dogs conducted a three-hour search of the River Severn. The woman was located safe and well and all teams stood down.

Ben Cruachan near Dalmally

Fall/Rescue Highlands

A family encountered difficulties while descending Ben Cruachan near Dalmally when the mother fell onto a ledge with a significant drop below. A young boy was instrumental in calling emergency services and remained with his mother to keep her conscious until mountain rescue arrived.

Outcome: The injured person was airlifted to hospital after receiving initial treatment on site.

A woman fell approximately 300 feet into a ravine on Ben Cruachan while descending with her family. Her 10-year-old son climbed down to her, called for help, and kept her conscious until Oban Mountain Rescue Team arrived. She was winched from the mountain by helicopter and evacuated to hospital in Glasgow.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by helicopter to hospital

Pentland Hills

A hillwalker became disoriented and lost in the Pentland Hills as darkness fell on Sunday evening and called for help. Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team responded with 19 members, aided by a police helicopter with searchlight, and located the walker cold but uninjured and walked them to safety.

Pillar Rock, west face

climber fall Lake District Serious incident

A 60-year-old climber fell on the route 'Megaton' on the west face of Pillar Rock on Friday afternoon. Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team coordinated with Coastguard and air ambulance helicopters to winch team members to the casualty, who was treated, stabilised and airlifted to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. The casualty's climbing partner was also safely assisted from the crag.

An Teallach, Wester Ross

base jumping accident Highlands Serious incident

A base jumper in his 20s was slammed into the north face of An Teallach by a wind gust moments after jumping from the summit ridge. He sustained only minor injuries and was able to climb back to his companions before being evacuated by helicopter. The rescue team noted he narrowly avoided a fatal fall.

Beachley, Severn Estuary

Two jet skiers ended up in the water without buoyancy aids while launching from a slipway at Beachley in the Severn Estuary on 15 September 2019. A nearby SARA volunteer training team responded quickly with throwbags and were able to rescue both individuals; one required first aid and ambulance transport after prolonged time in the water.

Outcome: both casualties rescued using throwbags and jet ski; one treated for prolonged water immersion and transported by ambulance

Goatfell, Isle of Arran

Arran Mountain Rescue Team found a body on Goatfell during a search for missing walker Valerij Tomarenko. The body was discovered in the water shoot area on the west side of the summit. The walker, a translator from Hamburg holidaying on the Isle of Arran, had last been in contact with family on 14 August.

Outcome: body recovered

A 71-year-old woman missing for four days was found alive in undergrowth near Bream Rugby Club in Gloucestershire after an extensive search involving rescue teams from Wales and the Midlands. Despite four days of severe weather including torrential rain and thunderstorms, she was discovered conscious and was attended to by casualty carers before being transferred to NHS care.

Outcome: located alive and conscious, attended by casualty carers and transferred to NHS ambulance

Pontneddfechan

Fall/Injury Brecon Beacons

Mountain Rescue teams were called out after a female hiker fell down a riverbank near Pontneddfechan. Due to weather conditions and lack of safe winching space, the casualty was eventually extracted by stretcher to the roadside for transfer to an ambulance.

Outcome: Transported to hospital

Pen Y Fan

The team responded to an incident involving an elderly gentleman who had fallen while ascending Pen Y Fan. Working with other rescue teams, the casualty received assessment and treatment for a head injury before being transported by stretcher to a waiting ambulance.

A woman in her 70s slipped and banged her head on the fells in August. Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team attended and provided life-saving treatment. The incident was filmed for a BBC One programme to highlight the importance of preparedness and safety when walking in the mountains.

A man in his 40s fell from his mobility scooter on Sugar Loaf Mountain in Monmouthshire and was rescued by Longtown Mountain Rescue volunteers. He was carried down the 1,955ft peak on a stretcher and transported to Nevill Hall Hospital.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by stretcher to hospital

Tryfan, Snowdonia

A 74-year-old walker lost his footing whilst descending Tryfan and sustained a leg injury. He was treated by Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team and winched to safety by Coastguard helicopter, then taken to hospital for further treatment.
