Grey Mare's Tail

Medical assistance/Unwell walker Southern Uplands

Mountain Rescue was called out on 8th April 2026 to assist a walker who felt unwell while walking at Grey Mare's Tail. Following assessment by the team, the individual was able to walk safely off the hill with support and a confidence rope.

Outcome: Safe return to car park

Tinto Hill (Green Hill)

Paraglider accident/Rescue Southern Uplands

Mountain Rescue Team members responded to assist with the rescue of an injured paraglider on Green Hill near Tinto Hill. The casualty was assessed by multiple services and subsequently winched into a helicopter for transport to a major trauma centre.

Outcome: Transported to hospital for treatment

Culter Fell

Injury/Slipping Southern Uplands

Mountain rescue teams were called out to assist with an injured walker near Culter Fell on Saturday, 8th November 2025. The individual had slipped and sustained a suspected broken ankle before being assessed and safely carried from the hill.

Outcome: Transported to hospital

Injury/Fall Southern Uplands

Moffat Mountain Rescue responded to a callout regarding an injured walker on the Southern Upland Way. The individual had fallen and sustained a suspected broken ankle between Wanlockhead and Beattock. Members of both MRT teams successfully located the casualty, provided initial care, and transported them from the hillside to waiting ambulance services.

Outcome: Transported to hospital for further treatment

Search and Rescue (Missing Person & Lost Walkers) Southern Uplands

Moffat MRT responded to two separate callouts on Sunday, 19th October 2025. The first involved a search for a missing person in the Glentrool area, followed by assistance with the rescue of two walkers who were delayed by injury and worsening weather conditions.

Outcome: All involved were safely located and evacuated.

Criffel

Injury (Lower Leg) Southern Uplands

Moffat Mountain Rescue Team responded to a callout for an injured young walker on Criffel. The team assessed the casualty and provided pain relief and splinting before safely extracting them from the hillside using a stretcher. The individual was subsequently transferred to the Scottish Ambulance Service for onward care.

Outcome: Transported to hospital

Knockendoch near Criffel

Injury/Rescue Southern Uplands

Moffat Mountain Rescue Team responded to a callout on Friday, 22nd August, to assist with the rescue of a walker who had sustained a suspected broken ankle near Knockendoch. Both Moffat and Galloway MRT members worked together to safely evacuate the casualty from the hillside before transferring them to paramedics for onward care.

Outcome: Evacuated and transferred to hospital

Loch Skene

Injury/Rescue Southern Uplands

Moffat Mountain Rescue was called out to assist with a rescue near Loch Skene following a fall sustained by a young walker. The casualty had suffered a suspected broken ankle and required assistance due to poor mobile phone signal in the area.

Outcome: Transported to hospital

Tinto Hill, Grey Mare’s Tail

Medical emergency/Fall Southern Uplands

Moffat Mountain Rescue attended two separate callouts over a weekend. On Saturday, assistance was provided to a walker with breathing difficulties on Tinto Hill, who was subsequently evacuated by the Scottish Ambulance Service. Later that weekend, the team assisted at Grey Mare's Tail following an incident where a hillwalker sustained head and hand injuries; the casualty was safely walked off the path before being transferred to hospital.

Outcome: Walker evacuated and transported to hospital

Mabie Forest

Injury/Extraction Southern Uplands

Moffat MRT responded to a callout on Tuesday, 27th May, to assist with the rescue of an injured mountain biker in Mabie Forest near Dumfries. Team members assisted emergency services by accessing forestry tracks and ultimately helped evacuate the casualty after initial treatment.

Outcome: Safely evacuated to hospital

Collin, Dumfries

Injury/Evacuation Southern Uplands

Moffat Mountain Rescue Team responded on 10 April 2025 to assist the Scottish Ambulance Service with a remote evacuation near Collin, Dumfries. The casualty required assistance due to a leg injury sustained from tree cutting. The team helped ensure the safe extraction of the individual.

Outcome: Casualty safely evacuated
