Phoenix Mine, Linkinhorne

Trapped/Mine Rescue South West

Two individuals were rescued from an abandoned mine in Cornwall after being trapped inside for up to 14 hours. Rescue teams successfully stabilized the people and brought them to the surface before they were transported to hospital for further examination.

Outcome: Rescued and taken to hospital

Phoenix Mine, Minions, Cornwall

A man became trapped approximately 45 feet down a shaft at Phoenix Mine in Minions, Cornwall, after becoming stuck on ropes whilst exploring with a group. Devon Cave Rescue Organisation and East Cornwall Search and Rescue responded, and he was rescued and conveyed to hospital after being suspended in the shaft for several hours and sustaining injuries.

Outcome: casualty rescued by specialist cave rescue team and taken to hospital

Gala Hill, Galashiels

injured walker Southern Uplands

A woman was injured after falling near Galashiels on Gala Hill on 7 January. Eight members of Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team assisted emergency services in getting her into an ambulance approximately one hour after the callout. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by ambulance to hospital

Oban / Argyll and Bute

Flood/Landslide Rescue Highlands

The Oban Mountain Rescue Team was called out following multiple floods and landslides in the area, where they reported that everyone involved in an incident south of Ardfern were safe. Additionally, ten motorists were rescued by helicopter near Inveraray after becoming trapped between landslides.

Outcome: All reported persons were safe.

Edale valley

Mountain biking accident Peak District

A mountain biker sustained multiple injuries while descending rough terrain near Jacobs Ladder. The casualty received treatment from a team paramedic before being carried down into the Edale valley to await transfer by land ambulance.

Outcome: Transported for hospital care

Waterswallows Quarry

Injured Walker Peak District

The team responded to assist emergency services with transporting a casualty from the Waterswallows Quarry area. The operation took approximately two hours to complete.

Outcome: Casualty transported by emergency services

Sir William Hill

Missing Person Search Peak District

A search dog and handler were requested to assist the Edale Mountain Rescue team in searching for a missing person on Sir William Hill. The individual was eventually located and reported to be safe and well.

Outcome: Person found safe and well

Ravenstor

Climbing accident/Fall Peak District

A climber sustained a head injury and lost consciousness after falling 6-8 metres near Ravenstor. A multi-agency effort was required to safely lower the casualty from the steep location into the valley.

Outcome: Transported to hospital

Grindsbrook

Injury/Rescue Peak District

A walker sustained a painful ankle injury at the top of Grindsbrook near Foxholes and was unable to descend on their own. Multiple team members attended the scene, requiring assistance from another local mountain rescue team to safely carry the casualty down through the area.

Outcome: Casualty was safely carried out.

Edale

Medical Emergency/Search and Rescue Peak District

Mountain Rescue was called out following reports of a stranded camper who had become uncontactable due to a medical episode. After efforts to establish communication, the individual regained consciousness and allowed teams to pinpoint his location via mobile phone. He was subsequently assessed by the team before being assisted to waiting ambulance personnel.

Outcome: Safe recovery after medical assistance

Windgather Rocks

Climber Injured Peak District

A team was called out to assist ambulance services with the extraction of a fallen climber at Windgather Rocks. The casualty was assessed on site before being placed onto a stretcher for transport by the North West Ambulance Service crew.

Outcome: Extracted/Assisted to medical services

Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh

ankle injury on steep ground Southern Uplands

Eight volunteers from Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue assisted Scottish Ambulance Service in evacuating a female casualty who had sustained an ankle injury on steep ground at Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh. The casualty was transported to New Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Outcome: casualty evacuated to New Edinburgh Royal Infirmary

A man was rescued from a 35-foot mineshaft in the Prideaux Wood area near Tywardreath Highway, Par. Emergency services including Devon and Cornwall Police, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, South Western Ambulance Service, and East Cornwall Search and Rescue Team coordinated the rescue. The casualty was transported by air ambulance to hospital with injuries initially assessed as serious but later downgraded.

Alva Glen, Alva

injured walker - significant fall Highlands Serious incident

A 27-year-old woman sustained a significant fall in Alva Glen on 13 June 2023 and was rescued from a gorge using technical rope rescue systems. She was airlifted to hospital by HM Coastguard Rescue 199, whilst her companions walked off the hill uninjured.

Outcome: casualty airlifted to hospital by rescue helicopter

Slieve Binnian

A man suffered a serious fall on Slieve Binnian and was airlifted to hospital by the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team. He sustained multiple fractures including to the skull, ribs and pelvis, and was told by hospital doctors he was fortunate to have survived the incident.

Ben Cruachan

injured hillwalker Highlands Serious incident

A hillwalker fell on Ben Cruachan and sustained serious injuries. Oban Mountain Rescue Team and HM Coastguard Helicopter attended, winching team members down to treat the casualty before airlifting them to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

Outcome: casualty airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow by helicopter

Stacach Ridge, Isle of Arran

Fall from height/Mountain rescue Scotland Serious incident

A runner fell from an icy mountain ridge on the Isle of Arran, sustaining multiple injuries. Rescue crews were called to the location and airlifted the individual to hospital after initial treatment was provided by a winchman.

Outcome: Hospitalised with multiple injuries

Ben Nevis, Tower Ridge

Climbing/Stuck Highlands

Two climbers required a rescue after becoming stuck on Tower Ridge at Ben Nevis. The operation involved members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team being lowered by rope before the pair were extracted by an Inverness Coastguard helicopter.

Outcome: Rescued

Caerketton Hill, Pentland Hills

Injury/Fall Southern Uplands

A mountain rescue team rescued an injured walker on Caerketton Hill after she broke her ankle while slipping. To reach her quickly in poor conditions, rescuers improvised by using a ski tow to ascend the hill before sledging her down the dry ski slope.

Outcome: The injured walker was safely evacuated.

Galloway Hills (Millfore area)

Missing animal search Southern Uplands

Drone Pilots assisted Lost Dogs Dumfries and Galloway in a search for a missing fox terrier within the Millfore area of the Galloway Hills. The operation concluded with a successful outcome.
