The Cheviot

Aircraft accident/Rescue North East

A multi-agency response was launched following a crashed glider high up on The Cheviot in Northumberland. The operation involved personnel being airlifted to the site and culminated in a stretcher lowering for the pilot to be transferred to a waiting helicopter.

Outcome: Pilot was taken to hospital and is recovering.

Two men died in separate falls on Wee Binnian and Slieve Commedagh in the Mourne Mountains on Sunday during high winds. A third man suffered a broken ankle in a separate incident and was rescued. The deaths are attributed to exceptional wind conditions that caught walkers unaware.

Outcome: two fatalities at scene, one casualty with broken ankle rescued

Dumyat in the Ochil Hills

Paragliding accident Highlands

A paraglider crashed near Stirling on Dumyat in the Ochil Hills. The Ochils Mountain Rescue Team and Ambulance Service responded to the scene, and a helicopter was used to airlift the individual to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Outcome: Rescued and transported to hospital

A 21-year-old German student died after falling 500 feet from a ridge on Carn Mor Dearg Buttress on Ben Nevis on New Year's Day. Three other members of the climbing party became cragfast and were rescued by helicopter. The incident was attributed to dangerous conditions including verglas on the mountain.

Outcome: casualty fatality; three others rescued by helicopter

A University of Bristol student died after falling approximately 500 feet while climbing the ledge route on Ben Nevis on New Year's Day. The incident occurred in icy conditions; three companions were safely evacuated by helicopter after becoming stranded, and the casualty was recovered by Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team.

Outcome: casualty died at scene

A missing person was reported on 30 December after his car was found abandoned at Ardgartan car park in Glen Croe near Arrochar. Despite an extensive seven-day search in extreme terrain by Arrochar and Police Scotland mountain rescue teams, the man was not located and police continued their enquiries.

Outcome: not located after seven-day search

Ben Nevis, Tower Gully

A 21-year-old climber died after falling in Tower Gully on Ben Nevis on Sunday 16 December. His climbing partner also fell but survived with non-life threatening injuries. The casualty was airlifted to hospital but died from his injuries.

Newcastleton, Borders forest

missing person Southern Uplands

A teenager was reported missing after failing to return from a late-night walk near Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders. Following an extensive overnight search involving mountain rescue teams, police, and dog handlers, the young person was located by a police officer on a minor road near the village at 6am after having taken a wrong turning in the forest.

Outcome: found safe by police officer

A sheep stranded on a steep cliff near Bull Ghyll at Honister Pass for three weeks was rescued by Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team volunteers. The team used fixed climbing cables and a metal bridge to reach and safely bring down the animal.

A mountain biker sustained serious injuries after falling during an event in the Mourne Mountains. The incident occurred during an organised event in the area.

A 16-year-old fell fatally while walking on Stac Pollaidh north of Ullapool on 26 August 2018. Emergency services were alerted after he was reported overdue, and his body was recovered by Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team with assistance from a coastguard helicopter.

Outcome: fatality

Two 16-year-old girls from an outdoor education centre group were rescued from Cader Idris on 23 August 2018 after one lost consciousness following a fall on loose ground and the other developed hypothermia symptoms. Both were winched to safety by coastguard helicopter and flown to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth.

Outcome: both casualties winched to safety by helicopter and flown to hospital

Slieve Bearnagh, Mourne mountains

hiker struck by falling sheep Northern Ireland

A teenager hiking in the Mourne mountains was struck by a sheep that fell from a crag near Hare's Gap on Slieve Bearnagh. He was evacuated by seventeen Mourne Mountain Rescue Team members and taken to hospital, where he was treated and discharged. The sheep was believed to be uninjured.

Outcome: casualty taken to hospital, treated and discharged

Missing Person Search Highlands

The team was called out to the Ben Lawers area to search for two missing hillwalkers. The individuals were successfully located using SARLOC technology and subsequently walked off the mountain by team members.

Blue Pool, Bishops Itchington

A 17-year-old got into difficulties while swimming at the Blue Pool in a disused quarry at Bishops Itchington on 26 July and died. His body was recovered the following day. The pool, located within a former limestone quarry, had warning signs in place but swimming had continued despite efforts by the site operators to prevent it.

Carn Mor Dearg, Lochaber

A 58-year-old walker died after falling on Carn Mor Dearg in Lochaber on Monday 16 July. Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and a Coastguard helicopter attended but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Outcome: casualty pronounced dead at scene

Dinas Mot, Snowdonia

climber fall with head injury Snowdonia Serious incident

A woman fell approximately 130 feet while climbing on Dinas Mot in Snowdonia and sustained a significant head injury, becoming unconscious and suspended from the crag by her climbing ropes. Fellow climbers on the scene immediately provided assistance, and the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team coordinated with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Rescue 936 helicopter, which winched the casualty to safety and transported her to hospital.

Outcome: airlifted to hospital by coastguard helicopter; transferred to Ysbyty Gwynedd

wet walker - refused callout; teenager trapped in gully Highlands

Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team refused assistance to a walker who became wet on Ben Nevis during midsummer conditions without waterproofs, advising him to descend himself; he remained in the summit shelter and walked down with another climber the following morning. The post also reports a separate incident in which a teenager was rescued by helicopter after becoming trapped in a gully during a river crossing near Ben Nevis whilst on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition, and mentions the ongoing search for a climber who fell through a cornice in January.

Moel Siabod, Snowdonia

A couple poorly equipped with gym shoes, trainers, shorts and no map was airlifted from Moel Siabod in Snowdonia after a woman twisted her knee while descending. Despite being unable to walk initially, she walked unassisted after being winched from the mountain by helicopter, prompting rescuers to criticise the callout as unnecessary and irresponsible.

Outcome: casualty airlifted by coastguard helicopter and walked off uninjured

Horrocks Moor

Body Recovery Pennines

Mountain rescue teams were called out to assist with the recovery of a body from Horrocks Moor near Smithills. Fifteen team members attended alongside police colleagues and used a stretcher to carry the person approximately 400 metres across the moor to an awaiting ambulance.

Outcome: Recovery completed

A solo female hiker was found dead on Glyder Fawr in Snowdonia after being reported missing. She was recovered from an upper cliff in the Ogwen Valley and is believed to have slipped and fallen. The woman was well-equipped and had been sending messages to friends before the incident.

Outcome: casualty found dead and airlifted to hospital

A man in his 60s from a training group became unwell at a high-altitude camp in Snowdonia during blizzard conditions. A coastguard rescue helicopter evacuated him in poor weather, and he was assessed at hospital but did not require treatment and was able to rejoin his group.

Outcome: evacuated by helicopter, no treatment required

Two ambulances became stranded in heavy snow on Foxcote Lane near Stourbridge on 4 March 2018. Severn Area Rescue Association volunteers assisted in freeing both vehicles, which were blocking access to patients requiring emergency care. All patients were eventually reached and provided medical care.

Outcome: both ambulances recovered and towed to main road; all patients reached and treated

West Linton, Borders

elderly couple trapped by snowdrifts Southern Uplands

An elderly couple aged 70 and 71 living in a remote home near West Linton became isolated when heavy snowdrifts up to 12 feet high surrounded their property. They were rescued by police officers and Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team after losing heating due to depleted firewood supplies. The couple and their two dogs were safely freed and are now staying with friends.

Outcome: couple freed safely with their two dogs, now staying with friends
